Cajun Fish Fry Recipe (USA)

Ingredients:

For the Fish:

• White fish (catfish, tilapia, cod, or basa): 500g (fillets)
• Lemon juice: 2 tbsp
• Salt: to taste

For the Cajun Coating:

• Cornmeal: 1 cup
• All-purpose flour: 1/2 cup
• Cajun seasoning: 2 tbsp (homemade version below)
• Garlic powder: 1 tsp
• Onion powder: 1 tsp
• Paprika or chili powder: 1 tsp
• Black pepper: 1/2 tsp

For Frying:

• Egg: 1 (beaten)
• Milk: 1/4 cup
• Oil: for deep or shallow frying

Homemade Cajun Seasoning (optional):

• Paprika: 1 tsp
• Salt: 1/2 tsp
• Garlic powder: 1/2 tsp
• Onion powder: 1/2 tsp
• Dried thyme & oregano: 1/4 tsp each
• Chili powder & black pepper: to taste

Instructions:

1. Marinate the Fish:
   1. Rub the fish with lemon juice and salt. Let it rest for 15–20 minutes.
2. Prepare Dry Coating:
   1. Mix cornmeal, flour, Cajun seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and pepper in a bowl.
3. Prepare Wet Coating:
   1. In another bowl, whisk the egg with milk.
4. Coat & Fry the Fish:
   1. Dip each fish fillet in the egg mixture, then dredge in the dry mixture until well coated.
   1. Heat oil over medium heat and fry the fillets for 3–4 minutes on each side until golden and crispy.

Serving:

Serve hot and crispy with lemon wedges, tartar sauce or garlic mayo. Great with coleslaw, fries, or cornbread on the side.
