Cajun Fish Fry Recipe (USA)
Ingredients:
For the Fish:
- White fish (catfish, tilapia, cod, or basa): 500g (fillets)
- Lemon juice: 2 tbsp
- Salt: to taste
For the Cajun Coating:
- Cornmeal: 1 cup
- All-purpose flour: 1/2 cup
- Cajun seasoning: 2 tbsp (homemade version below)
- Garlic powder: 1 tsp
- Onion powder: 1 tsp
- Paprika or chili powder: 1 tsp
- Black pepper: 1/2 tsp
For Frying:
- Egg: 1 (beaten)
- Milk: 1/4 cup
- Oil: for deep or shallow frying
Homemade Cajun Seasoning (optional):
- Paprika: 1 tsp
- Salt: 1/2 tsp
- Garlic powder: 1/2 tsp
- Onion powder: 1/2 tsp
- Dried thyme & oregano: 1/4 tsp each
- Chili powder & black pepper: to taste
Instructions:
- Marinate the Fish:
- Rub the fish with lemon juice and salt. Let it rest for 15–20 minutes.
- Prepare Dry Coating:
- Mix cornmeal, flour, Cajun seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and pepper in a bowl.
- Prepare Wet Coating:
- In another bowl, whisk the egg with milk.
- Coat & Fry the Fish:
- Dip each fish fillet in the egg mixture, then dredge in the dry mixture until well coated.
- Heat oil over medium heat and fry the fillets for 3–4 minutes on each side until golden and crispy.
Serving:
Serve hot and crispy with lemon wedges, tartar sauce or garlic mayo. Great with coleslaw, fries, or cornbread on the side.
